Glenn Cunningham

Glenn Cunningham was born on August 4, 1909 and he died March of 1988. He was born Atlanta, Kansas, but grew up in elkhart, Kansas. At age eight he got in an explosion when someone put gasoline instead of kerosene in the can at his school house. The explosion took his brothers life. The doctors recommended amputating his legs but his parents wouldn't let them. The doctors predicted that he was never going to walk again. He had lost all the flesh on his knees and shins and all the toes on his left foot were gone, his transverse arc was also destroyed. Through a new type of therapy and his determination he was able to regain the ability to walk and also to run. Cunningham was nicknamed the "Kansas Flyer". He competed in the 1932 summer olympics and in the 1936 summer olympics.
